The Macallan Distillery

Top Tourist Attractions

The Macallan distillery is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery in Craigellachie, Moray, Scotland. The Macallan Distillers Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Edrington Group, which purchased the brand from Highland Distillers in 1999. Founded in 1824 and produces whisky with age ranges from 12 years to 78 years old.

Nestled above the River Spey just outside Craigellachie, the Macallan is a jewel in the crown of Speyside. Founded by Alexander Reid in 1824, the distillery is surrounded by the 485-acre Easter Eliches estate.

Macallan is taken from two words in the Gaelic language, ‘Magh’ which means ‘fertile ground’ or ‘level field’, and ‘Ellan’, which is thought to be a reference to St. Fillan a monk known to heal people with magical powers.

The Macallan was one of the first distillers in Scotland to be legally licensed. The distillery produces several expressions in its core Sherry Oak series which can be found in 12-year-old and 18-year-old versions with a 10-year-old and 30-year-old cask strength (58%) expression being available. Rare special releases and other small production run bottlings are released periodically and quickly become collectible.

The Macallan draws on the contributing factors of Spanish oak, North American casks and of course, Scotch Whisky brought together using traditional methods and craftsmanship.

One of the most important factors for the exceptional quality of Macallan’s Scotch is its “cut”. Also known as the best portion of whisky, the cut is the amount of distilled liquid that is taken from stills. The Macallan usually uses only 16% of the distilled liquid, which is one of the best cuts from all over Scotland. Only the finest portion is used for aging in oak casks, then resulting in the most valuable whiskies in the world.

At The Macallan house, the colour of the Scotch produced results simply from the natural characteristics of the wood and beverage.

Finally, the last pillar of The Macallan reputation concerns the constant search for perfection. This house is keen to always keep the quality at the highest point possible, offering the world unparalleled scotch whisky.

The stars of the show remain, however, Macallan’s unique copper pot stills, are arranged in three interconnected circles. And, if the thought of all the whisky being created gives you a thirst, there is a stylish bar, boasting no fewer than 952 different expressions of The Macallan.

Curiously Small Stills

The Macallan’s Curiously Small Stills are amongst the smallest on Speyside. Their unique size and shape give the spirit maximum contact with the copper, helping to concentrate the ‘new make’ spirit and providing the rich, fruity, full-bodied flavours characteristic of The Macallan. There are 24 of these spirit stills, crafted from copper, each holding an initial ‘charge’ of 3,900 litres.

Exceptional Oak Casks

Our exceptional oak casks are the single greatest contributor to the outstanding quality, natural colours, and distinctive aromas and flavours of The Macallan. These oak casks are crafted to our specifications and account for up to 80% of the final aromas and flavours of The Macallan. Because of this, we spend more per cask than any other distillery in sourcing, crafting, seasoning, and caring for its casks.

In July 2019 a new and striking visitor center opened at the heart of the estate. Edrington Group invested £140 million new distillery and visitor experience which drew international acclaim for its bold vision and blending with the surrounding landscape. Designed by London-based Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners it made the shortlist for the Stirling Prize for excellence in architecture.

This new experience takes guests through the heritage of The Macallan which includes a full distillery tour and a sampling of some of their single malt whiskies. You will be welcomed with The Macallan roast coffee and home-baked scones, before exploring The Macallan Whisky Wall.

You will then be led by one of their friendly and knowledgeable hosts through the Distillery experience, including a guided tour of the iconic Cave Priveé for a tutored tasting of Macallan whiskies, before visiting The Macallan Bar for a final whisky experience.
