In addition, the location provides a superb base for day trips to either King's Messing and Buckingham or Tempsford/Deane Locks near Cambridge and Northampton.
The Huntingdon Boathaven & Caravan Park is a privately-owned site with 30 touring pitches and has been owned by the current owners for 25 years. It sits at the confluence of the two rivers, where they pass through a large low circular weir that separates the site into two halves.
The Alton Water Sports Centre is another popular facility for various activities, including dinghy/keelboat sailing and individual and club sailing tuition. There is also the Hartree and Hartrey Lakes for fishing, stand up paddling and canoeing. The Riverside Sail 21 Club is located on the banks of the Alton Water and offers sailing training for youngsters aged 6–18. Alton also has several public footpaths, including a circular walk of the famous Alton nature reserve.
